Logging in with different ICQ Numbers

To change the current user or register/unregister an ICQ# on your computer:
Click on File/Change Current ICQ#. You have options for the following:
  1. Change Current ICQ# - allows you to login with another ICQ# installed on your Mac.
  2. Add ICQ# to computer - allows you to add to your Mac a previously registered ICQ#. You will need that account's ICQ Number and password.
  3. Remove ICQ# from computer - Removes from your Mac the files relevant to the current ICQ Number.
  4. Register New ICQ#
  5. Unregister ICQ# - Unregisters an ICQ Number from the ICQ Network. Note: This action is not reversible.
Text Translation with ICQ

A useful little feature of ICQ is its ability to send any text selection to a translation site on the web. After you make a text selection (e.g., in one of the message windows), go to Edit/Translate and choose a translation site and a language combination (e.g., French to English). ICQ will send the selected text to a translation site, and display the result in your web browser.

ICQ Communities

Click on the ICQ button at the head of your Contact List to view a list of the available ICQ communities on the ICQ Web site and other important and useful links that can provide you with different information services.

The Windows Menu

When you have several windows open in ICQ, you can easily locate them using the Windows menu. Each open window appears in this menu with an easily identifiable title. You can use this menu's shortcuts to quickly access any open window. For example, the Contact List window can always be brought to the front by pressing Cmd-1.

ICQ's Preferences Folder

Starting with version 2.5, ICQ stores all its local user data in the System preferences folder.
For information on sharing your account settings between Mac OS Classic and Mac OS X, see the Tips Help page.

Below is a screen shot of the ICQ folder inside the Preferences folder, showing some of ICQ's files.

  • The Global folder contains items that are common to all ICQ accounts. These include the global registry and the ICQ Sounds folder. By adding sound files (System 7 Format) to this folder, you can access them inside ICQ and associate them with various ICQ events.
  • The ICQ Logs folder contains files maintained by ICQ during its operation.
  • The Users folder contains one sub folder for each ICQ Number installed on your Mac. Removing or even renaming such a folder disables this account on your Mac.
  • Inside every account folder, there are at least 5 files:
    • two whose names end with .db.dat and .db.idx - these files store ICQ's message archive;
    • two whose names end with user2.dat and user2.idx - these files contain the account's Contact List and user details;
    • ICQ.reg, which contains the account's preferences.
    • The folder may also contain two files whose names end with user.dat and user.idx. These files were used by older versions of ICQ.
