To view your security and network options click on File and select Security and Network. The security and network options consist of three tabs: Security, Privacy and Connection.

The Connection Tab

The Security Preferences window, showing the Connection tab

In the Connection tab you have options for setting up your network configurations. You may enter Host and Port details. If you are using a Proxy server Socks 5 you may enter settings for that server and enter a username and password.

The Security Tab

The Password tab in the Security and Network Window

This tab allows you to change the following security options:
  • Password: enables you to change your password. Important: It is very important to remember your password! You may not be able to use your ICQ number without the password. We recommend writing your password down and putting it in a secure place. If you forget your password, you may try the password retrieval service available on the ICQ Web site at http://www.icq.com/password.
Note that the password retrieval service may be of help only in certain cases and only using an Email address or addresses that are/were entered in the Email field of the ICQ# User Details. For more information please refer to http://www.icq.com/password.

  • Authorization Mode: Changing This option allows you to determine whether or not users should request your permission to add you to their Contact Lists, thus allowing them to detect your online/offline status. You set your Authorization mode during the ICQ registration process or you may change it at any time.

  • Web Aware: Activating The Web Aware feature allows you to determine whether others can see your online/offline status on the World Wide Web. When you activate this feature other Internet users will able to see your online or offline status from the Web. Please note: During the period your ICQ number's Web Aware feature is activated, and your ICQ program is connected to the ICQ servers, the Web status indicators pertaining to your ICQ number will indicate that your ICQ number is online, even if you activated an Invisible (Privacy) mode with respect to certain users. Therefore, when your Web Aware feature is activated, other ICQ and Internet users will be able to see your on-line presence from the Web.

The Privacy Tab

The Privacy tab in the Security and Network Window

The Privacy tab allows you to set the following options: Ignore List and other ignore options, Invisible List and the Visible List.
  • Ignore List: You may set ICQ to ignore messages, chat, and other events sent to your ICQ# from ICQ numbers on your Ignore list. Other Ignore options:
You can set ICQ to ignore multi-recipient messages from all users or from users not on your Contact List. You can also choose to accept messages only from users on your Contact List.

  • Invisible List: Users in the Invisible List will not be able to see your online status, but messages from these ICQ users will still be delivered to you online. These users will see your status as offline even if you are online. Note: During the period your ICQ number Web Aware feature is activated, and your ICQ program is connected to the ICQ servers, the Web status indicators pertaining to your ICQ# will indicate that your ICQ# is online, even if you have activated an Invisible (Privacy) mode with respect to certain users.

  • Visible List: The Visible List allows you to select users who will be able to see your online status even when you are in the Privacy (Invisible) mode.
